The Department of Architecture is sponsoring a roundtable
discussion, to be held in conjunction with the visit of University of Oklahoma
Big 12 Faculty Fellowship recipient, Associate Professor David L. Boeck,
entitled
Analog and Digital:
A Dialogue about Representation in the
Design Studio
at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 25th, in Seaton Hall Room
104. The event is open to the public without charge.
The struggle to integrate traditional and digital
representation methods in the design studio is shared amongst the institutions
of the Big 12 and this roundtable discussion is intended to spark a critical
dialogue. With this in mind, architecture faculty from four Big 12 universities
will engage in the discussion. Professor Boeck will be joined by Assistant Professor
Michael McGlynn and Associate Professor Larry Bowne of Kansas State University,
Associate Professor Shannon Criss of the University of Kansas, and Associate
Professors Steve Hardy and Jeffrey Day of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Professors McGlynn and Criss are co-sponsoring Prof Boeck’s visit at their
respective institutions.
The roundtable discussion will begin with brief
presentations from each of the participants followed by an interactive
discussion between participants and the general audience. The following are
some of the questions being asked of participants: What is your position in
regard to hand drawing and computer techniques in the design studio? Do you
favor one over the other or a hybrid approach? How is your approach situated in
relation to the overall architectural curriculum at your institution? Is it
sympathetic or does it stand in stark contrast to the prevailing approach?
Ultimately, the goal is to move the discussion beyond the rather tired debate
of traditional versus digital techniques toward providing at least provisional
answers to the question: How can representation answer to contemporary issues
in architecture?
Attendance at the roundtable discussion can be submitted as
continuing education credit for design professionals by contacting Diane Potts.
Big 12 Faculty
Fellowship Program
The Chief Academic Officers of the Big 12 Universities
created the Big 12 Faculty Fellowship program for the purpose of stimulating
scholarly activities in the areas of teaching, research and service. The
program offers the faculty the opportunity to travel to member institutions to
participate in cross mentoring among universities, develop working
relationships and exchange ideas with others
